Culture

cultureHow many cultures are there in the world? This might once have been tackled by learned scholars, but today our understanding of culture and cultural heritage seems to be growing more diverse with every day. From the contrasts implicit in travelling from the African plains to the South American jungles, from the Australian wilderness to the metropolitan city life of Manhattan, the cultural variations are astonishing.

But you don’t always have to travel far to experience a cultural shift – very often there are cultural differences between generations, neighbourhoods, towns and regions within a single country. Perhaps there are almost as many cultures in the world as people, but just as there are always significant, and fascinating differences to be discovered when exploring and immersing oneself in another culture, it is heartening to realise that, no matter how different we all may seem, and act, and behave, we are all human, and all share the human understanding and curiosity which has made us as varied as we are today.
